DADA & Sophie Research

What is DADA?

DADA is a type of Art Movement used within the early 20th century around the time of the World War. It was created to express the feelings of the people at the time who rejected the logic, reason and aestheticism of modern capitalist society. It allowed people to create art without having to follow any specific guidelines and it ended up with receiving the name of "DADA".

DADA Examples

DADA can be presented in many different ways whether it is in art, animations or even music videos. Here are some examples of DADA being presented within the media as the same type of style and genre is being used in the process.

This is a DADA Music video which you can tell straight away due to the strange and unique style. In this video, you can see some weird things that you wouldn't usually see within the daily life as DADA can be presented using weird structures, facial expressions and mustaches. Even the environment is quite peculiar which makes the whole theme quite abstract itself.

As you can see from these DADA styled images, they are very unique and different since its not something we see in real life or anything such as realism but the style seems quite effective and I can see why people could like this type of work.

What is Sophie Taeuber-Arp?

Sophie Taeuber-Arp was a Swiss artist, painter, sculptor, textile designer, furniture and interior designer, architect and dancer. She met a German-French DADA artist called Jean Arp at an art exhibition in Zurich, they worked on a range of projects together and ended up marrying in 1922. Sophie designed DADA-inspired puppets and costumes that she used for performances as a puppeteer and even contributed to other activities such as dancing. Taeuber-Arp has also created multiple sculpturing works in the style of DADA using polychromed wood, she was also great at weaving and textiles as she studied it in a Zurich University.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp Examples

Here is a DADA sculpture that Sophie Taeuber-Arp had crafted, and as you can see, she uses very abstract shapes mixed with bright colours with the sculpture being held on a pedestal. I quite like the design of this as it could easily stand out besides any other artistic pieces due to the strange use of shapes and colour which I find quite appealing.

Here is a costume that Sophie had created in a DADA style. As you can see, she has used bright colours and lots of different shapes and patterns. I like the design of this since it's really unique and the whole scheme is really nice looking. I feel like this would look really stylish with all of the bright colours used, especially back in the time when this was actually created.

Here is one of the Puppets that Sophie had created. I think that it looks quite effect with the consistent and simple colour scheme used and I also really like the design as its quite chunky, not too complex and it uses a lot of shapes to actually define itself.

Here is another one of the puppets that Sophie has created which seems to be more complex than the other one that I linked above. It's got quite a sinister look on its face as well as the current pose. I think that this reflects on the "DADA" term quite well showing twisted emotion.
